Abstract
The rhesus D antigen on red blood cells is highly immunogenic. As little as 30¥ìl of red blood cells has caused Rh(D) immunization, and after a single 1 ml injection of Rh(+) red blood cells, 10~40% of Rh(-) subjects develop anti-D. It is well
known
that Rho (D) immune globulin is very successful in preventing Rh immunization if it is given before Rh immunization has begun and if it is given in sufficient dose. We have experienced a Rh(-) postpartum woman, who was transfused about 500ml of
Rh(+)
packed blood cells accidentally and given 27 vials of RhoGAM (300§¶ Rho(D) immune globulin/vial) to prevent Rh sensitization within post-transfusion 72 hours. Intensive study and observation of the patient following injection showed no
significant
adverse effect and sequelae. This woman has never developed Rh(D) antibody and she delivered another Rh(+) healthy baby 3 years after this accident.
